GippSport StreetGames January Update

GippSport Streetgames have been busy over the holiday period providing fun for the whole community.

GippSport Streetgames has provided recreational opportunities at Latrobe Regional Gallery, Latrobe Youth Space, Cowes Beach in Sale, Action Sports competitions in Mirboo North and across the Wellington municipalities, and much more.

Streetgames, in partnership with Latrobe Regional Gallery, provided family fun every Saturday for three weeks in January. Streetgames collaborated with the art exhibition, ‘Lean’ – an inflatable art piece which you can jump on and hide in. Families travelled from all around Gippsland for the event, traveling from as far as from Sale to join in the fun.

This created a unique experience for participants to enjoy art and physical recreation in the same space.  Participants explored the ‘Lean’ exhibit while also playing Chess, Badminton, Croquet, Tug-of-War, and Spikeball in the courtyard, enjoying the summer sun. Participants reported “That was so much fun” and “We can’t wait to come back next time”. We look forward to future partnerships with Latrobe Regional Gallery.

Streetgames and Latrobe Youth Space collaborated weekly to provide a ‘Road Show’ with the end of year event being at Callignee Recreational Reserve on Friday, the 21st December 2021. Callignee’s tight-knit community came together to spend time in Sports and Recreation together. Participants reported “the kids had fun” and that they are “looking forward to the next time we come to Callignee.” We look forward to our next opportunity to come to Callignee.

Additionally, Streetgames had the opportunity to provide fun at Schoolies in Cowes, Phillip Island. Although the sun was hot, the participants got involved in Beach Volleyball and had a ball, pun intended. Due to the heat, we had to regularly move the Streetgames event to avoid the intense sun. Participants were excited to show off their skills while having fun in the sun. Thank you, Bass Coast Shire Council for engaging us.

Streetgames delivered the Mirboo North Skate competition on December 17th. This event was an huge success with over 150 people in attendance and over 50 competitors. Participants competed in scoot, skate and BMX categories. All skill levels were welcomed, from beginner to experienced. Following the event, many Mirboo North residents expressed gratitude to Streetgames for providing the Skate competition. “It’s great to see events in Mirboo North, we don’t have many events. When something happens, the whole town gets around.” said one participant. Our coaches reported that “The whole community came together to deliver a successful comp. It was so much fun to deliver that we ended up having the participants get involved with helping out, it was great!” Streetgames is looking forward to providing more skate competitions to Mirboo North in the future.

Similarly, Streetgames have commenced the Wellington Skate Park Comp Series. The Sale Skate Park Competition on the 18th of December was an outstanding success with over 100 people in attendance and over 40 riders all aiming to place in the competition. Due to the extreme UV index that day, a last-minute time change had to be made, pushing the start time from 11 am to 4 pm. Participants embraced this time change and turned up in the droves to enjoy the Wellington Skate Competition. It was great to see the wellington youth engaged in the competition and assisting the Streetgames Crew with microphone announcements. Streetgames will be in Wellington again to provide the Yarram, Maffra, and Heyfield competitions in the coming weeks.

Baw Baw Shire Council has also provided opportunities to deliver a series of skate comp, clinics and Streetgames. We’ll be heading to Drouin, Warragul and Rawson skate parks in Feb and March and clinics in Neerim South, Yarragon and Rawson. Check our socials for further information.

Streetgames is excited to be entering into the second phase of our GO Soccer Mums Program. GO Soccer Mums has been on break since mid-December. The program will resume on the 2nd of February. Sponsored by Football Victoria and in partnership with UMSLV, GO Soccer Mums is a Soccer program designed and provided specifically for women by women. GO Soccer Mums is all about having fun, meeting new people, and learning basic football skills in a social, judgment-free environment. It’s not just for mums, but all women, from all walks of life. Streetgames is proud to be able to provide this program free of charge to local women,.

Social Soccer and Kids Social Soccer commenced last week at Churchill Synthetic Pitch at Federation University. Gippsport Streetgames provided Soccer fun to players ranging from 2 to 60 years old. This was the first series that Streetgames have incorporated Under 12’s as part of the Social Soccer Program. The young participants reported “That was fun” and “I did it” as they engaged with the program. It is not too late to get involved, Streetgames are still accepting registrations for this series.
